CC Students Join TKA Fourth Grade Trip to St. Augustine

On March 18th and 19th, ten fourth grade students and three parent chaperones from Clewiston Christian School joined students from The King’s Academy in West Palm Beach on a trip to St. Augustine to explore Florida history.  In St. Augustine, students saw many of the historic city’s attractions including the old fort (Castillo de San Marcos), St. Augustine light house, an alligator farm, the Spanish and Indian villages, the city’s oldest jail, the Heritage Museum, and the church that Henry Flagler had built for his daughter and granddaughter.

While in St. Augustine, the students took a trip by tram to see the city as it was in years past.  On the way, they met the jailer who joked with the students that if they spit on the sidewalk, he would have to put them in jail.  Since the students obeyed the jailer’s request, they visited the jail as visitors, not inmates  The students also climbed the 219 steps to get to the top of St. Augustine’s historic lighthouse.  After a steep climb, they were able to enjoy the view of the city below.

One of the highlights of the trip was a visit to the Spanish and Indian Villages, because students were able to do many hands-on activities.  They made candles, jewelry, played games, and worked on digging out a canoe.  They also had fun getting their faces painted like the Timucuas Indians.

This trip is an excellent opportunity for students to see first-hand about what they are learning in history class.  They especially enjoyed seeing the Castillo de San Marcos.  Their faces lit up when they saw the magnitude of the fort,” Miss Phillips, fourth grade teacher, said.  Jon Otto, TKA Elementary Principal, added, “We had a great time with the students and parents from Clewiston Christian School.”
